Our mission

We believe that no-one should suffer at the hands of others and we work towards an inclusive society, free of prejudice, that can pave the way for restorative community.

Education

We believe that education is a simple and effective way to change the prospects of young people living in developing countries. Through our supporters, we have educated thousands of children all over the world and given them access to employment opportunities that they simply would not have had.

We believe that giving children the opportunity of an education can change their future for the good. All our partners believe that education is key to breaking the destructive cycle of poverty and we will always do our best to support children and young people in gaining the knowledge, skills and confidence that they need to transform their own lives, giving them dignity and hope.

Education also positively impacts the health of students. Being in school provides students with food and in some cases accommodation and a place of safety. Wider career options reduce the risk of children, typically girls, being forced into the cycle of early marriage and dependency. For example, a recent study by the Education Department in Uganda found that girls educated to the age of 11 were 50% less likely to contract HIV/AIDs. Girls educated up to secondary level are 3 times less likely to marry before the age of 18.

Education is the most powerful tool for improving health in places like Uganda.

Healthcare

We believe health care is a basic human right and whoever we partner with has the opportunity to offer healthcare to those in need. Healthcare comes as part of our educational projects, every student is given access to a doctor should they fall ill. This ensures they get the best out of their time at school and spend the minimum time out of the class room.

We have specific projects that are aimed at tackling acute conditions found in rural communities or offering health care in remote areas. We support mobile and rural clinics in small communities in Sri Lanka and Zambia, these clinics provide much needed medical support for local people that is accessible. We also support the work of the Luke Society in Peru who perform over 100 cleft lip and palate operations for local children every year, and a school clinic in Kampala, Uganda, that looks after the health of over 500 students and is also open to the community.

Income Generation

Dignity is a key outcome of any work we support, providing a means for a family to provide for themselves, building self-worth and creating an environment where those who are earning a wage can demonstrate to others the value of self-determination.

Through income generation projects, we are able to give people the boost to use their skills to shape their futures. Each year we send funds to our partners to provide chicks, goats, cows, bicycles and sewing machines to people in their communities. Giving in this way allows people the chance to earn their own income. We believe this is a ‘hand up’ and not a hand out.

Roots in our community

Our community coffee hub is to a welcoming, inclusive space that provides supported volunteering opportunities, meaningful work experience, and language classes. We also serve as a base for tailored support, offering spaces for mental health initiatives and social prescribing referrals.

Our coffee hub reduces social isolation, particularly among vulnerable groups. It fosters community engagement, improves mental well-being, and creates pathways back into education, employment, or training. Through meaningful roles and a supportive environment, participants develop confidence, skills, purpose, and social connections.

Additionally, we actively engage with community groups and have a good reputation, which has been built by word-of-mouth through current volunteers and service users.

We love our town and the people of Aldershot, we want to be able to use all that we have at Karuna Action to give back to our local community, for no other reason than to bless our town.
